SynergyT is Medtronic's premium neurostimulation
system for the management of neuropathic pain of a non-structural nature
that is refractory to conservative treatments.
Neurostimulation with Synergy allows the flexible treatment of patients
whose pain
is unsatisfactorily controlled on existing therapies, by inhibiting or blocking
the
sensation of pain through the delivery
of electrical pulses to the spinal cord
or to the peripheral nerve
The Synergy system consists of an implantable pulse
generator (IPG), which contains a special battery and electronics that
deliver electrical
pulses at settings managed by the physician
The IPG is typically
implanted under the skin in the lower abdomen and is connected to one
or two leads which are implanted near the spinal cord
The patient is able to program the appropriate
level of stimulation (within prescribed limits set
by the physician), and can also turn the system
on and off using a hand-held programmer
